Brief Church History

The Church of God and Saints of Christ was re-established in the Earth, according to I Corinthians 1:1-2, by Prophet William Saunders Crowdy on Bul (November) 8, 1896. Prophet Crowdy was born to slave parents in St. Mary's County, Maryland Ab (August) 11, 1847. Originally called Wilson, he spent most of his childhood on a plantation. At the age of 16, he joined the Army as a cook during the Civil War. Soon after the war he settled down on 160 acres of land in Guthrie, OK.

In 1892, he began receiving revelations from God, the beginning of the fulfillment of the writings of Malachi 4:5, "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord: and he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth wiith a curse." These revelations led to the re-establishment of the Church of God and Saints of Christ in Kansas. Amidst the struggles African-Americans faced during slavery, the Propher prospered in spreading the Gospel and gaining souls for Christ. Membership grew by the thousands.  In 1902, the Church was registered with the Library of Congress as the 667th religious organization.

With the help of God, through the Holy Spirit, the Prophet was able to establish Tabernacles throughout the world-the United States,  Canada, Jamaica, regions of Africa, the Cayman Islands, and in England. On Ab (August) 4, 1908, after battles with illness, Prophet Crowdy fell asleep. He was laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetary in Newark, NJ. Though his passing caused great grief and unrest within the Church, his legacy, his works, and his spirit live on in the Saints! The Church of God and Saints of Christ is presently under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer, Bishop Robert D. Grant, Sr.
